Congress Misses Farm Bill Deadline
(KTNC) - The Congressional panel that was trying to finish a draft of the Farm Bill missed its deadline over the weekend, raising questions whether the bill can be passed in the House by year’s end.
A Farm Bill was supposed to be passed by this time last year, but Congress went with a one-year extension of the current bill.
Without a new farm bill, U.S. Ag Secretary Tom Vilsack says his agency will have to start implementing federal farm policies that date back to the 1940s – which are far more costly. Vilsack says farmers nationwide are delaying key decisions because of the uncertainty surrounding the farm bill.
Congress is now in recess for the Thanksgiving holiday. In December, the House will be in session for two weeks and the Senate for slightly longer before adjourning for the year.
According to a report released last week by the White House Council on Economic Advisors, agriculture accounts for nearly five-percent of the Gross Domestic Product, while one-in-12 U.S. jobs are in agriculture.
