(KTNC) - A Falls City man was arrested after authorities say he led a Richardson County Deputy on a chase in a stolen pickup.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Deputy Clinton Stonebarger clocked a 1986 Ford F-150 going 79-miles-per-hour in a 60-mile-per-hour zone on Highway 8 west of Falls City shortly before 2:00 a.m. Sunday.
According to the affidavit, the truck sped up after Deputy Stonebarger began following it. The truck swerved several times before turning north on 646 Avenue, where the driver lost control of the truck and went through a ditch and into a pasture before crossing back onto the road. The driver lost control again near 710 Road and 646 Avenue, going through a ditch and hitting a telephone pole.
The driver fled the vehicle on foot, and Deputy Stonebarger followed him into a wooded area where he was found lying down near a creek. The driver, identified as 28-year-old Shawn Luginbill, said he was a passenger in the vehicle and the driver was a man named Robert, though Deputy Stonebarger says there was no passenger in the vehicle.
The affidavit says Luginbill smelled of alcohol and failed a preliminary breath test.
He was booked into the Richardson County Jail on initial charges of operating a motor vehicle to avoid arrest, DUI, and driving with a suspended license.
The pickup was reported stolen later Sunday morning from the area of 23rd and Stone Street in Falls City. Falls City Police say the pickup belonged to Tamela Roberts.
