(KLZA) The Mound City Board of Aldermen conducted a public hearing during their regular August meeting last week for setting the 2013 tax levies. No one from the public was present for the hearing.
The projected tax levies are $1.89 per $100 of assessed valuation, which includes a 30-cent street light levy approved by voters in April. After discussion the Board unanimously approved a levy of $1.84 per $100 of assessed valuation which is approximately 3.5 cents higher than last year.
Following the hearing Aldermen approved the proposal on first reading.
In other business bids were opened for sealing the two city parking lots and certain streets. A bid of $44,452 from McFadden Construction was for an estimated 25,357 square yards of slurry seal and re-striping of the parking lots. The bid was approved unanimously.
A bid was awarded to JC Tree Services for tree trimming along Nebraska and Savannah Streets and Weightman Road. It was the lowest of two bids received.
A bid of $1,850 from J & E Concrete to construct another sidewalk to the north entrance of City Hall was also approved.
The Board tabled discussion on a proposal for the City to purchase approximately $2,250 worth of white vinyl fencing to be placed along the north side of Griffith Park. The fence would be constructed by the Mound City Golf Club.
Aldermen met with Jeremy Johnson and Phil Morris representing Farmers Mutual Insurance regarding the sewer system at 1411 State Street. They want to build a new facility at that site and ordinances require them to bore under the highway to connect to the city sewer system. They are seeking permission to install their own septic system. The matter was referred to City Attorney Brian Tubbs for further review.
Aldermen approved issuance of a resort liquor by the drink license for Verlarde LLC, the new lessee at The Klub. The matter now goes to the State for final approval.
Properties listed on the delinquent tax sale were discussed. An executive session was held for the purpose of discussing legal and personnel issues.
