4 Way Stop Installed at Missouri Intersection

(KAIR) -- Not long after a new bridge is opened leading Kansans into Missouri, the next major intersection in Missouri also undergoes a major change.

The Missouri Department of Transportation has announced that the safety improvements at the intersection of U.S. Hwy. 59 and Route 45, east of the town of Atchison, have been completed and the intersection will begin operating as a four-way stop Thursday.

Transportation Project Manager Wesley Moore says with a four-way stop, the department expects to see fewer of those types of crashes.”

Moore said the key to making this safety improvement work is alerting drivers of the need to stop.

To that end, MoDOT installed oversized stop signs with flashing lights, oversized warning signs, rumble panels, and intersection lighting.

The department does not expect the four-way stop to cause much more delay than the previous two-way stop configuration.

Department traffic counts show that about nine out of 10 vehicles that enter the intersection make a turning movement, so most vehicles are already slowing down or stopping for this intersection.
