( KNZA )-- Despite the recent discovery of underground voids at several locations during excavation of the existing sidewalks in downtown Hiawatha, phase two of the streetscape project remains under budget.

Along with addressing the underground voids, the latest change order amounting to an additional nearly 53-hundred dollars to the contract price, includes the use of a different type of sand between the brick pavers, installation of six additional water meter pits and an additional roof drain.
Even with the change order included, Kingsley says the city’s share of the project currently remains nearly $32,000 under budget.
The change order brings the current total project cost to more than $834,000.
The Kansas Department of Transportation is funding 70 percent of the construction cost, with the city responsible for the remainder.
