UPDATE: Two Teens Injured in Atchison Co. Accident
07/29/2012

(KAIR) --  Two Atchison teenagers are recovering from serious injuries sustained in a single-vehicle accident Saturday evening in rural Atchison County.

According to Atchison County Sheriff John Calhoon, the accident occurred at 5:11 on 286th Road, just west of U-S Highway 73.

Calhoon says, a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, driven by 17-year-old Alyssa Everett, was eastbound on 286th and left the roadway for an unknown reason at this time and rolled into a ditch onto its top.

Calhoon says Everett was ejected from the vehicle.

Everett was taken by ambulance to Atchison Hospital, and then lifeflighted to Heartland Regional Medical Center in Saint Joseph.

She was then lifeflighted again to Children’s Mercy in Kansas City.

Aly’s mother, Estella, says she’s currently in stable condition.

A passenger in the vehicle, Colby Spillman, was lifeflighted from the scene to Heartland as well.

However, Colby’s mother, Diane, says he had to be transported to KU Medical Center for further treatment due to the severity level of injuries to both of his arms.

Diane says there are several scenarios Colby could face, depending on surgery, but nonetheless, it will be a long road to recovery for him.

Calhoon says the accident remains under investigation, but he says he does not believe alcohol was a factor in the accident.

He says both were not wearing seatbelts.

Both families extended gratitude for the continued prayers and well-wishes they have received during their children’s recovery.
