Motorists in northwest Missouri will want to be on the look out for mowing activity over the next few weeks. The Missouri Department of Transportation says state workers will begin mowing the roadsides across the region beginning this week.
Beginning today (Monday), mowing will begin along busy freeways and expressways. Mowing will then move to rural two-lane roads in the 20-county northwest area. State routes on highways and streets through cities, smaller towns, and suburban areas will also be mowed.
Tractors will be escorted by protective “follow” trucks. They will be on the road from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and some Fridays through the end of May.
In most areas, tractors will make one pass making cuts of six to 15 feet wide, depending on terrain and obstructions. Mowing will also be done in mid-July and September. Between mowings, transportation officials say motorists who see grass and weeds blocking visibility at intersections along state roads should call MoDOT and workers will remove the obstruction.
If you come upon a mowing operation, MoDOT officials say you should slow down and be prepared to stop or drive very slowly, and pass the tractor when it’s safe to do so.
The Department of Transportation hopes to have mowing along state roads completed by Memorial Day weekend.
