The Holton and Troy baseball teams split a double-header Monday, April 2nd at Chandler Park. Holton's Brandon Schumann pitched good in game one as Holton took an early 8-2 lead and held on for an 8-7 victory. Troy never trailed in the night-cap behind a complete game four-hitter by Jordan Thornberry and won 12-3 to earn their first win of the year. In game one, Troy battled back with a two-run double by Reece Simpson and a three run homer by Thornberry. However, sophomore Cooper Zeller came in and recorded the save improving Holton to 3-0 on the year. Jay Morris had a pair of hits and run for the Wildcats. In game two, Jordan Thornberry pitched a brilliant game allowing just four hits and striking out seven in a 108 pitch complete game effort. Troy scored twice in the first frame then broke the contest open with six runs on six hits in the third chasing Holton starter Jacob Pool. Cody Bennett highlighted the big inning with a three-run homer before Collin Jasper added a two-out, two-run single to put Troy up 8-0. Troy pounded out 17 total hits in the night-cap including three each for Simpson, Colton Masters, Zach Langford and Dylan Norris. Master had four RBI and also went deep in game one, while Simpson scored four runs as Troy evening their season record at 1-1. Kolton Oliverus tossed the final four plus innings for Holton, who got a hit, run and RBI from Chance VanAusdale before suffering their first loss of the year.
In DVL Baseball, Riverside and Maur Hill-Mount Academy split an exciting double-header that needed extra innings. The Cyclones took the first game 8-7 in 8 frames before the Ravens rallied for a 12-10 decision in game two. Dylan Gabriel pitched 7 innings with as many strikeouts while surrending 6 runs and hits in game one. Derek Nold pitched the final inning and got the win. Sam Cooney pitched three plus innings in relief of TJ Kocour to take the loss. MH-MA led 4-1 into the fourth inning but Riverside came back and took a 6-5 lead with a solo homer by Blaine Wilson in the sixth. Paden Halter delivered the winning hit for the Cyclones while Sawyer Adkins had three hits and Nold scored twice in the game. Dustin Gosq had a trio of hits and runs for the Ravens. In game two, Cooney pitched five innings for MH-MA and with the game tied at three going into the fifth inning, the Ravens scored 8 runs on 3 hits and took advantage of 5 of the 14 free passes given up by Riverside pitchers in the contest. Riverside got 3 runs back in the sixth but left the bases loaded as Cody Calhoun came in and recorded two strikeouts and would eventually retire the final five batters to earn the save. Nold and Brandon Bell each had three hits for Riverside and Bell scored three runs before the Cyclones dropped to 2-1 on the year. Kocour delivered two hits for MH-MA.
Royal Valley baseball improved to 5-1 on the season with a split Monday against St. Mary's. The Panthers posted 4-3 and 9-5 victories to earn their second sweep of the year. Royal Valley also split last week losing to Valley Falls 8-7 before winning 5-1 in game two.
The Holton softball team was back in the Capital City Monday and split a close twin-bill against Topeka High at Hummer Sports Park. The Wildcats won the opener 6-4 behind pitching from Logan Fornelli improving their record to 3-0 on the year. In game two, Holton trailed but battled back on a couple occasions including a run in the seventh to send the game to extra innings. Holton scored in the eight and then plated two in the ninth to take a 5-4 lead, but Topeka came through with the final two runs of the game (6-5) to earn the split and hand Holton their first loss of the year.
