A 22 year old Atchison man will have several years in prison after being convicted on felony marijuana possession with intent to sell charge.
Derek Newson was sentenced to 49 months in prison Friday in Atchison County Court.
He was arrested on June 28th of last year by Atchison Police on a warrant.
While being detained on the warrant, the police officer found five marijuana baggies.
Newson was out on a two year parole period during the time of his arrest.
He was previously convicted on several felony charges, including armed robbery.
The sentence was delayed for several weeks pending results of a mental evaluation to see if he was fit for sentencing.
It was determined this week that indeed he was fit.
Newson’s sentence was almost the 51 month max on the sentencing guidelines for the lever three felony charge.
