Beginning October 1, 2020, anyone 18 years or older will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or another acceptable form of ID to fly within the U.S. In 2005, Congress passed the REAL ID Act as part of the 9/11 Commission’s recommendation that included a minimum-security standard for state-issued driver’s licenses. Kansas began issuing REAL ID credentials in August 2017 by placing a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of licenses. A REAL ID is not a required credential, but will help ease the check-in process when flying or entering a federally protected facility or military base. For information on how to obtain a REAL ID, go to www.ksrevenue.org/dovrealid.html.
