USD 415 Could Add High School Baseball
08/11/2016

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha school district could add a high school baseball program beginning in the spring of 2018.

District patron Paul Twombly, speaking on behalf a group spearheading efforts to see the sport added, told the Board of Education Monday evening they had met their goal of obtaining $20,000 in pledges to fund the first two years.

Twombly said Hiawatha is currently the only Big 7 League school without a baseball program, and believes sports can have a positive effluence on kids.

Board members voiced support for adding the sport, but some said they had concerns about getting the number of kids to field a team.

The Board told Twombly the district would need the money in hand by February 1st, 2017 in order to add the sport beginning in the spring of 2018.

In the meantime, Hiawatha High School Activities Director Kim Lillie says she plans to survey both middle and high school students to gauge their interest.

After starting, Lillie said around $7,000 a year would be needed to maintain the program.

A local effort several years ago to add a baseball program fell short of raising the funds needed.

In other business, the Board approved a pilot 7th-12th grade football program, beginning in the 2016-2017 school year.  $1,500 is being added to high school football coach Ted Brown’s contract to be in charge of the program.
