Local Communities Battle Winter Weather
12/28/2015

(KAIR)--Local area communities are trying to stay on top of the winter weather situation, clearing roadways, and walkways, of the falling snow and sleet.

The City of Atchison is among those making the effort. Deputy Public Works Director Clinton McNemee tells MSC News, “Everything's going as planned. We're hitting primaries and secondaries [streets] first, and trying to give some attention to the downtown area, make sure everybody can get to their doctors appointments and get to the businesses and everything downtown. All of our equipment's up and running.”

McNemee says the timing of the storm, hitting just as the Christmas break ends for the City, is proving to be a challenge. “Not only have we got our first snow, but we're doing it on the day we're making up Thursday and Friday for Christmas trash and recycling routes.”

McNemee says residents can help with the clean-up effort by where they choose to park and how they clear their driveways. “Anything to minimize on street parking is always helpful. I know some people don't have any other options and we do our best to work around that. The other thing is, when you're clearing out your driveways, it's always good to pile the snow to the right side of the driveway, so that when the plow trucks come by, they don't push the snow back, across, in front of the driveway.”

State crews, including KDOT and MODOT, have also been working to keep highways clear for travel, with the effort launched Sunday night when the wintery mix began to fall.
