(KNZA)--The Hiawatha Board of Education has accepted the insurance settlement for the bus totaled in a wreck last month that sent 22 students to local hospitals with injuries.
The Board Monday evening accepted an offer of $23,510 from EMC Insurance Companies, which reflects the actual cash value of the 2007 school bus.
The rollover crash happened the morning of November 18th near the intersection of U.S. 73 Highway and 170th Road.
An investigation by the Kansas Highway Patrol determined the crash was the result of driver error, saying he failed to stop at a stop sign.
The Board Monday evening accepted the resignation of the bus driver, 74-year-old Hiawatha resident Laurence Gnagi, as part of their consent agenda. The resignation is effective immediately.
Discussion was held on a proposal for a bus rider tracking system that would allow the district to track what students are riding on each bus. However, Board members expressed concern about the cost of the proposed computer-based system. Instead, it was the consensus of the Board that Superintendent Penny Hargrove should look into a bare bones system for tracking riders, possibly utilizing cell phones or tablets.
In other action, the board accepted the retirement resignation of High School and Middle school Industrial Technology Teacher Curt Weldon, effective at the end of the current semester.
And following an executive session, the Board voted to offer a contract to High School Principal Andrew Gaddis for the 2016-17 school year.
