(MSC News)--Despite speculation that terrorists were the likely culprits, Missouri authorities now say recent bulk cell phone purchases in that state is the work of cell phone traffickers, not ISIS.
KRCG-TV reports authorities in Macon, Missouri Friday made the announcement, with the Macon County Sheriff's Office explaining that groups typically make bulk prepaid cell phone purchases in order to acquire the phones at low prices and then sell them for a profit elsewhere, likely overseas.
Macon is one of six cities in Missouri where small groups of men have recently bought dozens of phones.
Speculation regarding a terrorism-connection has run rampant since the purchases, despite numerous past cases across the nation which include the same motive.
Local Facebook posts have been shared in recent days highligting poorly sourced news stories making wild claims of terrorist connections, connections now proven to be unfounded.
