Hiawatha Capital Improvement Plan Approved

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has approved a capital improvement plan for the next five years.

The plan, approved during this week’s regular meeting, prioritizes projects planned for 2016 through 2020 and provides cost estimates for them.

The plan was put together based on the recommendations of city staff.

The Commission also approved an ordinance that establishes a capital improvements fund. The fund will be used by the city to finance, in whole or in part, projects contained in the plan.

Among the major projects slated for next year is the design and construction of a new water treatment plant at a estimated cost $5.1 million, with the project expected to run into 2017. The city’s share of the project is estimated around $3 million.

Also planned for 2016 is phase II of the city’s sewer rehab project at an estimated cost of $2.8 million. The city’s share of the project cost is estimated at nearly $1.4 million.

In addition, the third phase of the downtown streetscape project is planned next year at an estimated cost of more than one million dollars, with the city’s share estimated at more than $300,000.

It was noted the capital improvement plan is a fluid document. Projects may be moved forward or delayed depending on available funds and need.
