(KNZA)--Repairs will be made to the ultra violet lighting system at the Hiawatha sewer plant.
On the recommendation of Public Works Director Dave Grimm, the City Commission this week approved the repairs at a price tag of more than $11,000.
Grimm says the city began experiencing a problem with the ultra violet lighting system in May following heavy rains. The piece of equipment is used to kill bacteria before the treated wastewater enters the receiving stream and serves as the last form of treatment.
Grimm said a fuse blew, causing a bank of bulbs to stop working, followed by the development of additional issues.
The issues caused the city to exceeded the permit limit for the amount of E. Coli bacteria being discharged from the plant in May and June.
