Domestic Violence Victims Offered A Helping Hand

(KAIR)--October is domestic violence awareness month, a time set aside to shine a light on the problem of domestic violence.

Relationships Kan, an program run by Catholic Charities of Northeast Kansas, seeks to help those who may be a victim of domestic violence. Program Manager Christina Sell says the problem is all too common. “Unfortunately, almost one out of four women in America will be impacted by this at some point in their lives. So our program is to try to help victims during a very difficult time, and we try to help them through support, giving them some strategies and tools to help them determine what kind of risk there is, and help them just promote their own safety and that of their family.”

Sell says “some of of the services that we provide may involve healthy relationship education, it may involved safety planning, we also do assessments to determine what level of danger they or their family may be in. We can provide them with referrals to other social service programs in their community to help them if they need help kind of during a difficult hump.”

Sell adds that there is no cost associated with the service, however, there are some eligibility requirements. She says “We primarily help those people who are struggling at the poverty level. And so those families that are challenged by poverty in rural counties, especially those with children...are very vulnerable if they are dealing with domestic violence. And so our agency strives to help those individuals and their families by providing help, hospitality, and hope at a time when they are being challenged by great need and danger.”
