Shooting Victim Winston Downing
Accused Shooter Terell Dixon
(KAIR)--New details emerge regarding the September 9th shooting death of an Atchison man. The details come in the form of the probable cause affidavit, related to the arrest of suspected shooter Terell Dixon, obtained by MSC News. The 19-year-old Dixon, who's held in Henry County, Missouri fighting extradition to Kansas, is charged in Atchison County District Court with 2nd Degree Murder in connection with the death of 24-year-old Winston Downing. He died after being shot in the head outside of Atchison's King Super Store at 912 Division Street. According to witness statements outlined in the document, Dixon was taken to the store by acquaintances to purchase cigars. It was there, the document states, he was approached by Downing, who was gassing up his moped, and asked if he was the one responsible for pistol whipping Downing's cousin. Dixon apparently replied in the affirmative. Witnesses state Downing was holding a semi-automatic pistol in his right hand, by his side, or behind his back. Downing apparently referenced Dixon also being armed, which led the accused shooter to produce what's identified as a black revolver and shoot Downing twice in the head. Dixon, who was still inside the acquaintance's vehicle when allegedly pulling the trigger, then ran from the vehicle and headed east on Division Street. 18-hours later, the suspect was located in Henry County, Missouri, but authorities have still provided no details on how he made his way to that location, which sits halfway between Kansas City and Springfield. The document also outlines witness allegations that Dixon may have been involved in local robberies, including that of a Pizza Hut Restaurant and Downing's cousin, apparently the same one referenced prior to the shooting. Dixon remains jailed in Missouri, charged in that jurisdiction as a fugitive out of state. Last week, Atchison County Attorney Jerry Kuckelman filed the necessary paperwork to begin the extradition process to see Dixon returned to Atchison County to face the 2nd Degree Murder Charge.
