(KAIR)--The Atchison County Sheriff's Department, with help from the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency and CVS Pharmacy, held the annual Drug Takeback Program Saturday, and Sheriff Jack Laurie is calling the event a success.
Laurie says that nearly 145 pounds of unused and expired medication was collected during the four hour program, and has been turned over to the DEA for proper disposal.
Laurie says there was a very important reason for holding the event, saying “it's to prevent people from flushing the pills down the toilet or from them getting into other's hands...others that have abused prescription drugs...just keeps that opportunity of the drugs getting into the wrong hands from actually happening.”
Laurie says he appreciates the great turnout and support from the community, and drugs will continue to be accepted at the Sheriff's Department throughout the year, where they will be disposed of properly.
