(KNZA)--Despite unanswered questions regarding funding, the city of Hiawatha is moving forward with plans for the construction of a new water treatment plant. The facility would address the ongoing problem of high nitrate levels in the city's water system.
During this week's City Commission meeting, Mayor Steffen Shamburg discussed the two options the city is facing.
Shamburg says the first option is to build a regional facility that would serve the residents of Hiawatha and Brown County Rural Water District #2, which he says the Commission feels is the best option. However, he said he isn't sure that will become a reality due to the uncertainty over federal funding because of political reasons.
Shamburg says the second option would be to construct a scaled down plant that would only serve Hiawatha. He said that means the city would no longer be able to provide water to Rural Water District #2, an option not favored by him or his fellow Commissioners.
Despite the uncertainty, Shamburg says the city has an engineering plan in place, has secured options on land, and is basically ready to go with constructing a new plant.
