(KNZA)--“ Cancer Awareness Week” has been proclaimed in Brown County.
At the request of Hiawatha resident Courtney Riley, the County Commission Monday signed a proclamation making the designation for September 27th-October 3rd.
The week will culminate with the 14th annual Missy Newell Memorial 5K Run/1 Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, October 3rd. Funds raised from the event go to the Missy Newell Memorial Fund, named in honor of the longtime Hiawatha resident who died in October 2001 at the age of 32 following a five year battle with breast cancer.
Brown County was recently touched by the death of County Clerk Debbie Parker following a hard fought battle with breast cancer.
According to the proclamation, cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States.
In other business, Jerry Speidel met with Commission to request use of the courthouse lobby on December 19th from 8:00 to 2:00 for the 22nd annual Tubafest. Commissioner's approved the request.
Also approved was a request for use of the courthouse lawn and lobby on October 3rd from 1 to 7:30 p.m. for the annual Family Fun Day The event is being put on by three Hiawatha churches---the First Christian Church, First Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church.
