(MSC News)--Two Kansas Indian Tribes are receiving a combined total of more than $950,000 earmarked to fund public safety initiatives.
That word from the office of U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom, which says the public safety grants are awarded through the U.S. Department of Justice's Coordinated Tribal Assistance Program.
The Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska will receive more than $876,000, with $426,000 designated for justice systems and alcohol and substance abuse through the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
An additional more than $449,000 will be used for the prevention of violence against women and tribal governments program through the Office of Violence Against Women.
The Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation is also receiving funds, granted nearly $75,000 for comprehensive tribal justice systems strategic planning from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
Grissom says the goal of the grants is to sustain and strengthen native communities in Kansas by improving public safety and promoting the fair administration of justice.
