(KNZA)-- A new large Redhawk mascot will be placed on the Hiawatha High School gymnasium floor.
The Board of Education approved the design Monday evening.
Superintendent Penny Hargrove says the district plans to re-do the gym floor next summer and thought it would be nice to add the mascot to give the gym a refreshed look.
Currently, there are smaller mascots along the sidelines. They will be replaced with a large Redhawk mascot in the center of the gym floor, which will face the home side.
It was designed by the high school principals, district’s director of maintenance and company that will be doing the gym project.
In other business, a grant will be sought to help pay for the supplies to paint a mural at the Hiawatha Elementary School.
The Board gave elementary school art teacher Katie Miller approval to seek an up to $500 Elmer’s School Teacher Tool Kit grant.
If awarded, Miller says it will be used to create a 4 by 8 foot mural to be placed near the second grade doors facing the playground. She said the mural will help promote the fact the school is now involved in the A+ program.
Miller says third and fourth grade students would help paint the mural.
