(KAIR)--Now that the school year is fully underway, there may be some students who could find themselves in need of some extra academic assistance.
Atchison Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Sheryl Swendson says the organization has just started an after school program, one that focuses on two core educational elements. With the first, the educational literacy element consisting of “academic subjects that are expanded from the classroom, but in a fun atmosphere. We help with reading, math, history, science, and even social studies. We will provide private tutors if needed, if that is what the child is in need of...a lot of technology with the computer lab...broad range of activities...overall, we just want to meet the needs of the children when it comes to that type of element.”
Swendson says the second element gives students even more options to learn. “The educational enrichment program is basically positive youth development. It might be performing arts, music, physical activity, health and nutrition, community services is a big thing with this...and career awareness for those high school students, and then we have a lot of fun things like the volleyball camps...kids absolutely love those types of things.
Swendson says the club does operate year round, offering activities such as camps and summer programs.
The Boys and Girls Club will be hosting an open house event on September 15th, starting at 6:00pm at the club building, located at 1215 Ash Street. Swendson encourages everyone who may be interested in learning more about the organization to come out and see what they have to offer.
