(KAIR)--It's good news for travelers to and from Atchison, Kansas and Saint Joseph, Missouri, as the detour around U.S. Highway 59 comes to a close.
The detour was made necessary due to the installation of the new Bankers Crossing Bridge along the route.
The Missouri Department of Transportation Friday said the bridge is now scheduled to open sometime Friday evening.
The detour, which forced motorists to find alternate routes, went into effect July 13th, and was expected to remain place for 30 days. However, uncooperative weather kept the major travel route closed longer than scheduled.
According to Modot, contractors have built a new, wider bridge which includes shoulders for safety, and realigns the roadway.
The former bridge was built in 1936.
