2016 Hiawatha City Budget Adopted

(KNZA)--The Hiawatha City Commission has adopted a 2016 budget of $6.1 million that contains a nearly 5 mill property tax levy increase.

The budget was approved following a hearing Monday evening drawing no public comment.

The budget calls for the city to collect more than $1.1 million in property tax revenue, a 7 percent increase over this year.

Mayor Dr. Steffen Shamburg says the budget reflects the Commission’s desire to build up the city’s cash reserves to an adequate level, provide the services the community desires and needs, while keeping the tax burden at a minimum.
Shamburg said the city’s cash reserves had been tapped over the last several years in order to maintain or reduce the property tax levy. He said when City Administrator Mike Nichols came on board he identified the need to build them back up as a priority and the Commission agreed.

In other business, the Commission approved extending a offer to Kraig Pyle to fill a part-time police officer position. Pyle previously worked as a deputy with the Brown County Sheriff’s Department.
