Special Needs Playground Plans Proceed

(KNZA)--Forward movement is made on the planned construction of a Special Needs Playground to be located at the Everest Middle School.

The idea was developed by Keith Olsen, a Brown County Commissioner known for his local activism on behalf of area youths.

First presented to the Board of Education for the South Brown County Schools last month, the School Board last week examined drawings for the project, and received word that the Fire Marshal has given approval to the design.

Last month, the Board approved the plan contingent that a safety fence be installed around the playground, and that effort is now realized through a private donation made by Everest Middle School Custodian Bert Hill. Olsen, meanwhile, is working to secure a donation of mulch to be used for the playground's fall zone.

The playground, to include two swings and two rides with a border around the area, is estimated to cost $6,000 for construction. However, those funds will not affect the school district, with Olsen to pick up the tab with monies he's already raised.

With the necessary steps now taken, the Board of Education has granted unanimous approval for the project to move forward.
