(DED / KLZA)-- Brownville, population 132, is the latest Nebraska community to earn designation in the Nebraska Department of Economic Development’s Certified Leadership Community Program.
Tecumseh is one of the eight other communities in Nebraska to earn the certification.
The program was created by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development in 2011. It is designed to help smaller communities deal head-on with challenges and change. Certification is earned by a community actively taking advantage of technology, or being willing to learn to meet program objectives.
Several new businesses and museums opened along the Main Street in Brownville in the past year. In May the community hosted the 75th annual Spring Flea Market and the 57th annual Fall Flea Market will be held in September. This year also marks the 49th season for the Brownville Village Theatre and the 25th season of the Brownville Concert Series.
A newly constructed wastewater facility with a new lagoon is going to be built. A business retention and expansion program was implemented this year with help from the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.
Village Board Chairman Martin Hayes calls the designation important for the economic growth of the Village of Brownville.
