(KNZA)--An elderly man accused of stealing rare gold coins from a St. Joseph museum made his first appearance in court Friday.

A judge entered a “ not guilty” plea for 80-year-old Richard Follett, of Stewartsville, to a charge of felony theft.

KQ2-TV reports Follett was allegedly caught on surveillance video using a pocket knife to pry open a display case to steal six gold coins dating back to the 1860s from the Pony Express Museum in March. The coins are valued at more than $7,000.

The coins remain missing.

Follett was arrested Tuesday by the St. Joseph Police Department.

He remains free on bond.
