(KNZA)--Kansas celebrated the anniversary of the state's 1861 admission of Kansas into the Union Thursday, while student's earned special recognition as part of the Kansas Day commemoration.
Local students were among those from across Kansas named as winners of the Happy Birthday Kansas! Discovering Kansas: A Student Photo Contest.
That happened Thursday during Kansas Day festivities at the Kansas State Capitol.
Two local youth took first place honors in the contest, as Haven Knapp, a Seneca second grade student won for “Robin Eggs!” while Morrill 11th grader Elsie Grimm won for the work “Feedin' Cattle.”
Second place honors went to Vermillion eighth grader Garrison Stowell and his work, “Smoky Sunset,” while 10th grader Macy Putnam, from Hoyt, won for “Winter Beauty.”
First place winners were awarded with iPads, while those taking second won a Kindle.
Governor Sam Brownback was on hand to congratulate the winners.
