(KLZA)-- Richardson County Commissioners took two steps forward on a proposed new jail on Tuesday. The Board voted to enter into a contract with Prochaska and Associates to serve as the architect for the project and approved advertising for bids to build the jail.
Bids will be opened at 2 p-m during the March 3rd Commissioners meeting.
County Attorney Doug Merz met with the Board and Steve Riley with the Prochaska firm, to discuss concerns he had with language in the contract concerning termination fees. Following a lengthy discussion Riley agreed to strike the termination fees from the contract saying if the project does not go forward, Richardson County would only be charged for work performed by the firm.
Merz said he also feels that if the project is not completed the County should be able to have the design they paid Prochaska to come up with. Riley called the plans the architects “instrument of service” and said that if the project is terminated, a cost for the County to have the plans could be negotiated.
The project calls for remodeling the former National Guard Armory on the west edge of Falls City into a jail facility. The anticipated price tag is in excess of three million dollars.
