Nemaha County Nebraska Assessor Resigns

(KLZA)-- The Nemaha County Nebraska Commissioners voted to accept the resignation of County Assessor Jana Smith when they met Wednesday. Smith said the resignation was due to health reasons. She has served one term as Assessor and was re-elected to office this past November. 

Deputy County Assessor Mallory Lempka was appointed to serve as Nemaha County Assessor on an interim basis.  County Clerk Joyce Oakley was authorized to advertise for applications for the position of County Assessor for the remainder of the term of office.  Applications and a resume along with a copy of a valid certification as Assessor is due to the County Clerk’s Office by January 30, with interviews expected to be conducted February 4. 

Authorization was also given to hire a part-time / temporary employees for the Assessors office during the transition period. 

The annual reorganization of the Board of Commissioners took place Wednesday with Dennis Wittmann elected Chairman of the Board and Bob Hutton elected Vice-Chairman.

Bob Engles of Auburn met with Commissioners regarding the need of local businesses in the four furthest Southeast counties of Nebraska to find and hire labor workforce.

Bids were opened for an excavator.  Bids were received from three companies ranging from $190,000 to $193,850. The Board will review the bids and expects to award a bid January 28th.
