(KTNC) - Voters in the Rock Port School District will decide a couple issues during the April 8 Municipal Election.
One issue is a $2.7 million bond to build a new competition gymnasium and the other issue is a 40-cent permanent levy for operational costs.
According to Middle and High School Principal Craig Walker, the district has tried before to pass a bond issue for a new gym. The current gymnasium was built in 1954, and Walker says the new gym would give them a facility that could provide more practice space, allow Rock Port to host district tournaments, and better meet community needs.
The new gym would be located on Nebraska Street, on the east side of the school building. It would include a regulation-size gym floor, locker rooms, a lobby area, restrooms, and storage area. It would be connected to the current school at Blue Jay Hall to the north and at the Elementary walkway to the south.
The Rock Port School District is currently paying off bonds on the construction of a new Vo-Ag, Middle School and High School Wing. Walker says they can bond up to $2.7 million without increasing the debt service levy. Five years would be added to the back end of the current bond, meaning payments would be completed in 2034 rather than 2029.
In addition to the bond, the Rock Port School District is asking voters to approve a 40-cent permanent levy. That would replace a 50-cent temporary levy that is due to sunset this year.
Walker says the levy would allow the district to continue offering current programs without making cuts.
