(KTNC) -- Voters in the Village of Brownville have overwhelmingly approved a bond and tax issue in a special election.
Approval of the issue will raise funds for improvements to the village’s sewer system, which are estimated to cost more than $800,000.
The measure enjoyed better than 90-percent support, with 59 voting in favor and five against. One ballot was marked both “yes” and “no.”
The special election was conducted entirely by mail. Ballots were sent to the 109 registered voters in Brownville on December 27, and 65 were returned by Tuesday’s deadline, for a 60-percent voter turnout.
This was not the first mail-in election in Nemaha County. County Clerk Joyce Oakley says the city of Auburn has conducted a special election by mail. She says the mail-in election results in a higher voter turnout.
