(KTNC) - A Falls City High School student was one of a select group of high school students to complete an intensive six-week math and science program this summer at Northwest Missouri State University.
Anastasia Finner was one of 47 students from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri to complete the 2013 Upward Bound Math and Science summer session.
Linda Davison helped found the program about 20 years ago. She says Upward Bound is for 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students. Falls City High School is one of 18 schools to participate in the program at Northwest Missouri State. (play :30 “that they do.”)
Upward Bound aims to encourage students’ interest in math and science. It’s funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Students in the program spend eight hours each day in classes discussing math, science, and technology. They also participate in sessions to improve their college readiness.
Program participants will complete a project of their choosing in the coming year. Davison says it’s the goal to interest the students in pursuing a math or science degree in college. She says statistics from the Department of Education show that 81-percent of Upward Bound students who go to college major in a math or science field.
