(KNZA)--A familiar face at Horton City Hall is currently absent, due to retirement; however, it won't be long before Candy Schmitt is back at work in the facility, selected to take over the vacant Municipal Court Clerk position.
That decision was made Tuesday when the Horton City Commission reviewed the applicants seeking the part time position. With Schmitt being the only application received for the role, the Commission unanimously approved the hiring of Schmitt at $10.23 an hour.
Schmitt formerly served as the Horton City Clerk/City Administrator, only recently retiring from that role. Due to state retirement requirements, Schmitt will not be available to begin serving in the Court Clerk's position until the first of November.
The Commission is also moving forward for filling the Chief of Police position, left vacant by last month's resgination of Beau Hasenohr, who had served in that capacity since January of 2012.
According to Police Commissioner Jeremy Forkenbrock, the city has received six applications for the job, with three of the applicants residing in Horton, while the other three do not. Some seekng the position are apparently already employed in the police department.
The commission, during Tuesday's meeting, was questioned by the public as to why there is no requirement for the Police Chief, once hired, to live inside the city limits.
It was explained by Forkenbrock that mandating residency could keep the best candidates from applying for the job, which is why the requirement of living within 30 miles was decided in the past.
The first round of interviews are scheduled to begin next week, with the Commission, once that's completed, expected to schedule a special meeting to interview the three finalists for the job.
