(KTNC) - The Village of Brownville is getting more than one million dollars from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to help pay for improvements to the town’s sanitary sewer system. The funding from USDA Rural Development breaks down into a loan of $809,000 and a grant of $353,000.
Brownville Village Chairman Martin Hayes says in a press release that the USDA funding, along with compliance assistance from the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, will help Brownville be able to build a lagoon system that will meet the town’s needs and keep user fees manageable.
Hayes says the current sewer facility is more than 40 years old and, considering the floods Brownville has endured in the last 20 years, it is no longer able to meet Department of Environmental Quality standards.
The USDA funds will be leveraged with $12,000 from the Village of Brownville to make the needed improvements to the sewer system.
