(KTNC) - Plans to build a new elementary school building in Pawnee City have been shelved. The Pawnee City School Board has been discussing whether to ask voters to approve a bond to pay for a $3.3 million dollar building project. But after discussing the matter with the Building and Grounds Committee this week, Superintendent Stephen Grizzle says the board decided now is not the right time to proceed with such a large project. (play audio :42 “not very good.”)
Grizzle says they’ll use Special Building Funds and set money aside to tackle some of the building issues on a piecemeal basis. (play audio :39 “several years.”)
One of the things Grizzle says they’ll be do immediately is rearrange some classrooms to create a larger space for the pre-school, which he says needs more room. The proposed building project included a larger elementary building and upgrades to the gym, cafeteria, and kitchen area.
In other business this week, the Pawnee City School Board approved a salary increase for the district’s classified employees. Grizzle says the board approved a 12-percent increase for employees that work during the school year and a six-percent increase for year-round employees. He says they’ve been working to increase the pay for classified employees for the last couple years. (play audio :30 “to our employees.”)
Classified employees consist of para-educators, secretaries, custodians, and other employees who are not teachers.
The board also approved a quote of $25,240 to buy 20 new laptop computers for the high school, and a quote of $2,636 to replace the district’s old Apple server.
