Prairie Lake Pickin' Returns To Holton
06/05/2013

(KNZA)--The sounds of a uniquely American musical art form, Bluegrass Music, will be heard in Holton through the weekend.

20 years will be celebrated Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings, as the Prairie Lake Pickin' Party returns to Prairie Lake:

Ron Meier has helped oversee the event since it's inception two decades ago, and plays with the Ready Brothers, one of 15 bands taking to the stage over the three evenings.

The event means more than just music, with Meier explaining that the event continues to raise funds for the Kansas Prairie Pickers Association which, in turn, provides scholarship funding to support old time and bluegrass music.

A highligh of the weekend, Meier says, will be the appearance, and performance, of a group of young pickers on Saturday, carrying on the old time tradition.

That group, the Treblemakers, will perform at 5:00 Saturday evening, the same time the music starts each evening during the festival.

Meier, who says it's hard to believe two decades have passed since the festival began as a Saturday evening only event, says it's the efforts of the Holton community that keep the music playing.

Admission to the Prairie Lake Pickin' Party is free, with attendees told to bring their own chairs.

Dry camping is also permitted for a cost of $10.00 for electrified campsites or $8.00 for those without electricity.
