Construction on Hiawatha Fitness Trail Expected Next Summer
12/12/2012

( KNZA )-Construction is expected to begin next summer on the Hiawatha Fitness and School Trail project.

Mike Riley, with the FAST steering committee, updated the Hiawatha School Board Monday evening on the project, which is planned for several phases.

Riley says the 1st phase will begin near the Little Hands Daycare at Lodge Road, head past Noble Park, the Fisher Center, curve behind the middle school, ending just east of the high school.

Riley says the 1st phase of 10-foot wide concrete trail, which will be about one mile in length, has been fully funded.

He says plans are being drawn up for the other two phases of the project as well.  Riley says they feel it will help the grant process going forward to have a “ shovel-ready” project. He says the committee plans to apply for additional grant funding early next year.

Benches and other amenities are planned for areas along the fitness trail.

Riley says they are not asking the school district for any financial commitment.  The school board previously agreed to allow access for the committee to place the trail on school property.

Riley says the city will responsible for maintenance of the trail, which will be for foot traffic and bicyclists.  No motorized vehicles will be allowed.
