( KNZA)-- A grant is being sought to improve a well traveled Brown County road.
Following a hearing drawing no public comment, the Brown County Commission today ( Monday) approved a resolution authorizing commission chairman Steve Roberts to sign an application for a $127,600 Community Development Block Grant through the Kansas Department of Commerce on behalf of Hamlin Township.
If awarded, the grant would be used to hard surface a one-mile stretch of Goldfinch Road from 290th to 300th Roads.
The township will clear the drainage ditches, replace three drainage tubes, and apply 4-thousand tons of rock in preparation for the county applying three layers of chip and seal next summer.
The project will allow the expansion of two businesses located in the 29-hundred block of Goldfinch Road—Grimm’s Gardens and Midwest Valley Irrigation.
The two businesses will jointly commit a nearly $64,000 investment in inventory, working capital or equipment, and create four new full-time jobs.
In addition, the two businesses will repay the CDBG program 25 percent of the project cost or nearly $32,000 over a period not to exceed ten years.
In a related matter, the commission Friday accepted the low bid from Governmental Assistance Services of Lawrence for 95-hundred dollars to serve as the grant administrator if the grant is awarded, which should be learned in mid-November. It was among two bids received.
