Effingham Man Opts for Prelim in Child Sex Case
08/24/2012

(KAIR) -- A 44-year-old Effingham man opts for a preliminary hearing on multiple child sex-related charges Friday in Atchison County District Court.

James White will have the hearing on September 12th in Atchison County District Court.

White is charged with two counts each of rape, aggravated indecent liberties with a child, and aggravated criminal sodomy.

The first set of counts is alleged to have occurred between January 2010 and January 2012 while the girl was 13 years old.

Those are off grid felonies, meaning, if convicted, White would be given a mandatory life sentence in prison under Jessica’s Law.

The second set of counts is alleged to have occurred between January and July of this year while the girl is 14. Those counts are levels three, five and three respectively.

The case is being investigated by the Leavenworth County Sheriff’s Office as there is a conflict of interest with the alleged victim and a member of the Atchison County Sheriff’s Department.

White remains in Atchison County Jail on 250 thousand dollars.

County Attorney Gerald Kuckelman says more charges against White could occur as the investigation continues.
