Public Health Warning Issued for Centralia Lake
08/17/2012

( KMZA )-- A public health warning has been issued for the Centralia Lake in Nemaha County due to the presence of high levels of toxic blue-green algae.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment said Thursday the lake had been upgraded from advisory to warning status.

A public health warning indicates that water conditions are unsafe and direct water contact is prohibited.

Meanwhile, the Brown County State Fishing Lake remains under “ advisory” status.

Water activities like boating and fishing may be safe.  However, direct contact with the water is strongly discouraged for people, pets and livestock.

As a result of this week’s water sampling, the health advisory has been lifted for the Atchison County State Fishing Lake.  The lake had been placed under the advisory July 20th.

While the advisory has been lifted, health officials say visitors to the lake should still exercise caution and look out for algae blooms in the water, as conditions can change quickly depending on the weather.
