SE Nebraska Trail gets Funding Boost
05/17/2012

The Village of Johnson will get some help with funding of a proposed recreational trail, after the Nemaha NRD Board approved the village’s application for $25,000 to help with construction.
The proposed trail around Sportsman’s Park includes landscaping with native grasses and trees, as well as educational signage and benches.  Matching funds are required for the village to receive the grant, which comes from the Urban Special Projects program for fiscal year 2013.
Total cost of the project is estimated at $224,000 with construction expected to begin later this summer.
The Nemaha NRD Board this month also agreed to enter into an agreement with the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality for cost-share funds to purchase rubber tire chips to use under playground equipment at Kirkman’s Cove Recreation Area.
The state funds are provided through the Waste Reduction and Recycling Program, total $3,200 and cover half the cost of the project.  The chips are to be installed this fall.
The board discussed a question from the Quad County Golf Association regarding the sale of alcohol on the Kirkman’s Lakeview Golf Course.
Alcohol is not currently sold on the course, but Association representatives say they are exploring what type of license they would need to do so – most likely for specific, private, events.
Since the Golf Association’s lease does not currently prohibit the selling of alcohol, the board directed NRD staff to coordinate with the Association and provide information on the options available.  Alcohol is not allowed anywhere else within NRD parks.
