Atchison Co Raceway Preparing to Open

For the first time since the 1950’s, dirt track racing will be returning to the Atchison area.

The Atchison County Raceway, located on Sedgwick Road north of Atchison plans to start their racing season on May 25th, and will continue to have races on every Friday and every other Sunday through Thanksgiving weekend.

The raceway, billed as “The Ultimate Cage Match” and seats up to two thousand people, has been a goal of owner and promoter Phil Birkinsha for a few years and it’s starting to come to fruition.

He says there will be several different types of race cars appearing throughout the season.

Alvie Christofferson from Saint Joseph is a “B-Mod” racer.

He’s been racing B-Mod cars for around five years is excited to have a track close by.

Some of those family activities for all ages include a mascot dog known as “Racin’ Rex.”

They will also have bounce houses for kids on select race days throughout the season.

For Christofferson, the family aspect makes it easier for him to race, as he has a day job too.

The raceway will be open and free to the public this Friday and next Friday to observe race car practice runs before the grand opening.

Gates will open at six and races start at eight on Friday’s and gates open at three on Sunday’s with racing beginning at five.
