Kansas Governor Sam Brownback has signed, into law, numerous bills, with three directly impacting the local area.
Among them are two highway renaming designations, including a portion of K-9 in honor of late Nemaha County Sheriff David Mee.
The section is located in Nemaha and Jackson Counties, from the junction of K-9 with U.S. 75 to the junction of K-9 with K-63.
House Bill 2509, to make the renaming happen, was introduced January 24th by 62nd district State Representative Randy Garber, of Sabetha(Play Audio :24 seconds)                                                                                                                                                                Mee was elected Sheriff in 2000, taking office in January 2001.
He died January 2nd of 2006.
The second renaming is in Jackson County, with a portion of K-79 from the junction of K-79 and K-16 to the junction of K-79 and County Road 254 designated in honor of the Barnes Brothers.
The two brothers, from Circleville, were major league baseball players in the 1920's and are credited as the first brothers in the Major League to pitch against each other as starting pitchers.
House Bill 2612 was introduced on February 2nd by 50th District State Representative Trent LeDoux of Holton.
Also signed into law, by the Governor, was House Bill 2546 which transfers the Horton Armory property from the Kansas military board to the City of Horton.  The transfer comes at no cost to the City.
The bill was introduced January 27th by Representative Garber.
