Frankfort Wildcats seniors, Jacob Broxterman and Jonathan Keating told there teammates they didn't want to have another year like the last, they wanted to win sub-state and make it to the state tourney. Well, they realized that dream and one more as they made it to the championship game, were they took on the Otis-Bison Cougars, for a chance to be Class 1A-Division II champs.
The game was one for the storybooks as both teams would fight, ultimately going into two overtime periods, with Frankfort coming out on top 62-53 in the second overtime. In what was a close game throughout, neither team saw a commanding lead, as Frankfort lead by one at the end of the first, but would give up the lead in the second quarter and go into halftime down by five. Down to start the third quarter of action Frankfort would cut the lead to one with in fifteen seconds off a Broxterman layup and free throw; after that they would go on to outscore the Cougars 16-7 in the third stanza. Heading into the fourth quarter of action Frankfort went from down four at the half to up four, but it would be Otis-Bison who came up big in the fourth, as senior guard, Trevor Keller hit a game tying three with three seconds left to go in the game. Frankfort would have a shot to win it in regulation, Keating threw a long pass to Broxterman full court and it was stolen by the Cougars and senior small forward, Patrick Piper shot a desperation three-pointer at the buzzer from three-quarter court that just rimmed out, which meant overtime.
Tied at 44-44 the first overtime would be low scoring, with only each team netting four points apiece, but it was Otis-Bison again tying it up in the waning seconds to force a second overtime. In the second overtime, Frankfort would see their leading scorer on the year and night foul out, in Broxterman, but would still outscore Otis-Bison 14-5 in the second overtime, to secure their second state title in school history.
Otis-Bison did everything they could to try and win the game, but ultimately didn't have enough. They were lead by senior forward, Brandon Pechanec who scored 21 points and grab eight rebounds. Junior, Dylan Wissman and senior, Keller added 13 and 10 points, respectively in the loss, as the Cougars took home second place in the Class 1A-D II state tournament.
While for the Frankfort Wildcats, saw yet again four players finish with double figures in a game this season. Frankfort was lead by their leading scorer on the season senior center, Broxterman who had his second straight double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Broxterman's fellow senior and counterpart in the post, Keating added a double-double to the mix, as well with 12 points and 12 rebounds. With junior guard, Calahan Brown and sophomore guard, Lucas Adams each tallying 11 and 12 points, respectively.
After starting the season off 0-2 and then 5-4 in their first nine games the Frankfort Wildcats, saw things come together starting in the Twin Valley League tournament; where they took second place. Since the beginning of the TVL tournament to the finish of the season the Wildcats have been 17-1; finishing the season off on a 14-game winning streak, to capture a sub-state title and Class 1A-D II state title.
Wildcats finish off their illustrious season 22-5, winning their sub-state crown and their second state title in school history (First was back in 1973). Frankfort also took second place in the TVL tournament this season and finished third in league for the regular season. In doing all that they saw the dream of their team come about and of their two seniors, as well.
