Atchison Man Pleads No Contest to Child Sex Charges
03/06/2012

A 36 year old Atchison man will face presumptive prison time after pleading no contest to amended child sex charges Tuesday afternoon in Atchison County Court.

Michael Grippin was found guilty by the court for two counts of aggravated indecent liberties with a child.

He was originally set to go to trial March 13th after pleading not guilty to three counts of rape in December.

The factual basis for the amended charges state Grippin was guilty of lewd touching of an 11 year old girl for purposes of sexual gratification on two occasions in July of 2011.

He was arrested by Atchison police on September 15th.

County Attorney Gerald Kuckleman says the parties reached an amended plea agreement to prevent further trauma of testifying for the victim.

Grippin’s family and friends embraced each other, shedding tears outside before leaving the courthouse.

Original charges were defined under Jessica’s law in Kansas since the victim was under 14 when the acts occurred.

Jessica’s Law carries an automatic life sentence per count.

Sentencing for Grippin is scheduled for April 9th.

He could face anywhere from 57 to 247 months for each level three felony count.
