(MSC News)--Two Florida residents were taken into custody Thursday afternoon after a high speed chase through portions of northeast Kansas and southeast Nebraska.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says the chase began on U.S. 24 Highway in Topeka after a trooper attempted to stop a sport utility vehicle sought by Lenexa Police in connection with a bank forgery case.
The vehicle failed to stop and led troopers on chase north on U.S. 75 Highway at speeds of more than 100 miles an hour.
The Patrol called off the pursuit near Holton after which a KHP helicopter starting tracking the vehicle to the Nebraska border. Other law enforcement agencies also attempted to stop the vehicle.
Once in Nebraska, Nebraska State Patrol troopers attempted to stop the SUV in Richardson County but the vehicle failed to stop.
Troopers pursued the vehicle north on Highway 75 before terminating the pursuit just south of Auburn.
The KHP helicopter continued to track the vehicle and was joined by a Nebraska State Patrol aircraft near Nebraska City.
Stop sticks were deployed and the vehicle finally came to a stop south of Plattsmouth after its tires were flattened. Both occupants fled on foot.
The Patrol says the driver, identified as 30-year-old Sunrise, Florida resident Donnell Johnson, attempted to enter several vehicles on a nearby car lot before being taken into custody inside the dealership.
The passenger, identified as 22-year-old Orlando, Florida resident Brijeth Garcia, ran into a field near where the vehicle stopped and was taken into custody.
Both were booked into the Cass County Jail.
Johnson is being held on charges of felony flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, no operator’s license, attempted theft by unlawful taking and possession of a financial transaction device.
Garcia is being held on charges including accessory to a felony and possession of a financial transaction device.
