(KLZA)-- During this weeks Auburn City Council meeting notice was given of a letter received from Jerry and Teresa Breazile which alleges there was an anhydrous ammonia leak the night of June 23rd on the southwest edge of Auburn.
In June the Council approved a special use permit to allow Dettmer Farm Service to park empty anhydrous tanks on the property.
The Breazile’s contacted the Nemaha County Sheriff’s office June 23rd about an anhydrous ammonia leak at the site.
According to the report submitted a Nemaha County Deputy Sheriff confirmed there was an anhydrous ammonia tank leaking approximately a block-and-a-half from the Breazile home and Dettmer Farm Service was notified of the leak and asked to come to the property.
A letter to the Council says several citizens in the neighborhood realize their health has been jeopardized by the City’s action allowing what they describe as a hazardous substance to be located in close proximity to their homes.
Also contacted since the incident was the Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality, Nebraska State Fire Marshall, the Mayor, City Council members and Auburn Planning Commission members and families living in the area.
No action has been taken regarding the situation at this point.
